Esports (electronic sports) are organized, competitive video gaming events where students compete individually or as teams in popular titles such as Fortnite, Rocket League, League of Legends, Valorant, and Super Smash Bros.
Unlike casual gaming, esports are structured and competitive — just like traditional athletics. Competitions include:
Defined rules and formats (brackets, rounds, match limits)
Coaches and school teams
Live spectators or streamed broadcasts
Championship trophies, recognition, and scholarship opportunities
Esports is one of the fastest-growing activities in the world, with more than 500 million global viewers and billions in annual revenue — placing it alongside traditional sports in popularity and impact.
Esports provides meaningful opportunities for students to grow and learn both inside and outside the classroom.
Hundreds of colleges and universities now offer esports programs and scholarship opportunities. For more information on scholarship opportunities, visit Stay Plugged In.
Students collaborate, develop leadership skills, and learn to perform under pressure — just like traditional athletics.
Competitive gaming requires planning, adaptability, analysis, and quick decision-making.
Students gain experience in broadcasting, live streaming, networking, AV production, graphic design, event management, and more.
Esports creates a competitive team environment for students who may not participate in traditional athletics, expanding access to school involvement.
